19" Sanyo DP19648 720p Widescreen LCD HDTV

DSCF2386

We’ve checked out several products from Geeks.com here at technogog, they’ve got a wide selection of things to choose from and their prices are very reasonable.  I’m not just saying this either to promote them, but I shop there myself and have for many years, I’ve recommended them to many people I know, I’m vey happy with their service and the quality of the products I’ve received. Geeks carries a lot of refurbished things, while I know a lot of people out there will not buy refurbs, I don’t have a problem with it, never have and never will, if I can save some money and get a good quality product I will, and Geeks has never let me down in this area. One of the things they carry are cheap tvs, cheap here meaning inexpensive of course, and one of the reasons they’re inexpensive is that a lot of them are refurbs, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

Today for review I’ve got a small HDTV, it’s the 19″ Sanyo DP19648 720p Widescreen LCD HDTV. It’s a refurb yes, but it looks brand new, and there’s really nothing wrong with it at all except for one stuck pixel that you honestly cannot even notice. The picture on this TV is beautiful, and the sound is very good as. This TV would be great as a second or third HDTV for your home, or even for a dorm room, it’s small and lightweight making it portable, and it features a VGA connections as well so it can even double as a monitor for your computer to further save some space. Read on to learn more…

Even though this is a refurbished product it comes in the standard retail box and it’s packaged very well with styrofoam padding.

Included with the TV is a remote (no batteries), user manual and some info about the digital TV switchover.

The TV itself is black in color and should fit with any decor, it’s got two speakers for stereo sound that actually sound pretty good for such little speakers.

On the right side you’ll find a series of buttons to control the TV, just Power, Volume and Channel. There is no input button on the side, but all you have to do is scroll through the channels to get to the inputs, though if you’ve got 100+ channels that’ll be a lot of scrolling…

On the left side is where you’ll find all of your inputs, I’d rather have them on the back myself to kind of keep the cables hidden, but this works for ease of use or access. There are two component connections, along with S-Video, standard composite, Coaxial, VGA, antenna connection and a 3.5mm audio jack that is used for the PC/VGA connection. There is no HDMI connection on this TV..

The picture on this TV is beautiful, the pictures I took of the screen don’t do it justice at all, but I tried. the blacks are black and the colors are very vibrant. I’ve got a PS2, DVD Player, VCR and Xbox360 hooked up to this TV, and everything looks great, especially the Xbxo360, even though it’s only 720P. I have an over the air antenna hooked up as well, though it’s unhooked in the picture below.

The menus are semi transparent, and while that’s nice, sometimes that blend right in with the picture in the background. There are a few features that you can access, but not many really, it’s fairly basic with options.

The main features are parental controls, Digital Noise Reduction and Loud Sound Suppressor.  The sound suppressor is something that I wish every TV had, it’s nice to keep the volume at an even level. You can let the TV automatically adjust the color settings or you can do it manually, for the most part though I found the automatic settings were just fine. it is a very nice picture on this TV, I’m very much surprised by it.

I’m a little bit disappointed with the info for TV programs, other TVs give you a lot more information, but basic is nice I guess…

DSCF3018

I’ve mentioned it before and I’ll say it again, the picture is beautiful on this TV, everything looks perfect and the colors are very vibrant, but this is a refurbished TV so there is one problem…sort of.. there is one stuck pixel. The pixel that is stuck is green, and it’s to the left of center, and honestly you can’t even notice it unless you’re really looking for it or there’s a lot of black on the screen, which doesn’t happen often. No one in my family has noticed the pixel except me and that’s because I was looking for it, so while there is one there, it’s not noticeable at all really.

The speakers are actually very good, I’m very surprised by them, and they can get loud without much distortion at all. My kids are using the TV for their Xbox360 and other stuff, and my oldest is into Guitar Hero now, with him playing I couldn’t hear any real distortions in the music even at loud volumes.

I don’t like the remote, it just doesn’t feel right, the layout seems wrong, and I think the main thing is the navigation buttons are odd shaped, I found myself fumbling around a bit trying to hit the right buttons. Here’s a larger picture of it, the bottom of the remote resembles a flower, and those are the navigation buttons, they’re just odd…

Conclusion:
If you’re looking for a nice HDTV with an excellent picture and quality sound at a low price then look no further, this thing is just what you want. With school about to start, this would be the perfect size for a dorm room, it’s lightweight too so it’s portable.

The pros of this TV very much outweigh the cons, as for the dead pixel, it’s not a big deal, you really can’t even see it. The remote though is annoying with it’s layout, I just don’t like it honestly.

Pros:
+Beautiful picture
+Very good sound
+Lightweight
+Easy to use
+Great price

Cons:
-One stuck pixel
-Remote layout not the best

Grades:
Overall score-9-10
Design score-9-10
Performance score-9-10
