Archos 7 320gb Internet Media tablet

About a month or so ago I looked at the Archos 5 and DVR station, a couple weeks ago Archos emailed me and asked if I wanted to take a look at their Archos 7 as well, so I said sure, why not!

Today for review I’ve got the Archos 7 320gb Internet Media Tablet, the 7 in the title meaning a 7 inch screen. It’s essentially the same as the Archos 5, but only a larger screen and hard drive capacity, I saw no real differences between the two at all except for those two things. Going from the 5 inch screen to the 7 inch screen might not seem like much, but it really is, it makes everything look so much nicer and even makes the Archos Internet Media Tablet a bit easier to use as well.

So read on to learn more about the Archos 7…

The Archos 7 has a big beautiful screen to watch movies, play games, browse the web and generally do the basic things you can do on your PC, it’s large capacity hard drive makes it very easy to take lots of stuff with you.

The price is a bit steep, especially considering you’ve got to spend more money for the ad-ons to really get all of the functionality of the Archos 7.

Well made
Nice large screen
Videos look great
Lots of storage space
Easy to use for basic stuff

Resets by itself at times
Some webpages don’t work correctly (plugins?)
Need to purchase additional things to fully make use of it

Not =quite= the same! I like the large screen of the Archos 7 (pronounced ‘arkos’, by the way), but I’m very disappointed that some of the add ons do not work on this unit. Specifically, the helmet cam. 🙁 The location of the charging port is a pain, too, as the cool little built in stand doesn’t work while its being charged.

I gave it a 1.0 out of 5 stars on Amazon.

Don’t expect it to do much until you $pend MUCH more money! Not for the faint of wallet.

So… this gadget seems like a technological wonder, until you start trying to use it for what its meant for, that is. I was so excited to get my Archos (pronounced ‘ar-kos’) 7! I unwrapped and registered and then read through the directions and proceeded to fill it with music and videos. Windows Media Player took EVERYTHING from my library, not just the playlists that I transferred, so now I’m going to have to delete everything and start over. VERY time consuming, but minor in the grand scheme of things.

As for the video… this device is touted as a media player, but when you try to play your own videos, it tells you that you need a $19.00 plug in from Archos!! That’s just maddening. So, after much hassle, I buy the plug in. The picture is grainy, unlike the beautiful test videos they include with the unit. I’m suspecting I have to buy the other hi-def plug-in for yet another 20 bucks! To add insult to injury, even if you WANT to buy cool plug-ins you can’t! For the initial review on, Archos had sent it to them to review preloaded with games and most likely with all available plug-ins (and some that obviously were NOT available!). Great, let’s play games, since we can’t play video! They are also extra (of course!) OK. Get out the credit card yet again. The sad part is, even if you WANT to pay for them, they are not available on the Archos website for the 5 & 7! Want the helmet cam that they brag about? Pfft. Not available. Want the Hi-Def plug in? As of Dec 11, 2008, it is not yet available. Now, try buying something from their site. They restrict sales to “Billing address only” but if you put in a PO Box as the billing address, they refuse the order and need a physical address (which, for a LOT of security conscious folks like myself is NOT my billing address!). I got around that by entering ‘BOX 12345’ instead of ‘PO Box’ which is the phrase that prohibits you from ordering. I spent all morning just trying to get the $20 plug in so I could play grainy video-the Archos site is downright frustrating, and made me enter the serial number of the unit in order to buy the plug in-another 10 minutes looking for the box, since the serial number is NOT on the back of the unit like the checkout screen claims.

The first night I had it, it seemed to take FOREVER to charge the battery. Of course, if you want the battery to charge faster, you have to buy the $29.99 mini-dock. Even if I wanted to buy it, the limitations on billing address make it impossible for me to buy anything but downloadable items. Grrrrr….

Other issues: It has a little leg built into the back that folds out to create a stand. Great idea, but when the USB is plugged in, this leg is useless because it plugs into the bottom. The little plastic stand does not help this.

This is definitely not a toy for the faint of wallet! Every time you try to do anything, you are faced with going to the very confusing Archos website and having to plunk down $20 to $399 for whatever add ons you need. I would have been better off with a portable DVD player and my iPod.

Well reading this review has certainly put me off the thought of purchasing one, I want it to do what it says on the box not find out afterwards I have to pay extra for the priviledge of watching a video/film… cheapo DVD is now ordered…

Thanks a lot to Krista and her very informative comments. I think I will just stick with my very reliable and hassle free portable DVD player. Sorry that you have to go through all that torture Krista, but it is not in vain – I am sure many like me who are already preparing to buy ourselves this gadget for christmas would be thinking again – I am surely not going to buy it before someone makes something that does what the consumers wants without any additional strings/ charges.

    In regards to Krista’s comments:

Please to not let her review affect your decision on buying the Archos or not. No offense, but she clearly lacks the technical know-how to operate a MP3 player.

Yes some video formats require an additional plugin to play, but these formats are fairly uncommon. And worst case scenario, you just download a FREE video converter and convert them to a normal format. And a low-quality video simply means your video was low quality. Please tell me how the archos would manage to make a video look bad, if the screen and video processor are able to render every other video fine? That makes no sense.

And games..? They are free. You can play any flash game that doesnt require a keyboard. Check out, there are hundreds of thousands of free games.

As for bugs, they are being addressed all the time. People think “oh its buggy, it will always be” Archos is releasing new firmware all the time (which the device automatically downloads btw), that fixes bug issues and even adds new features.. So dont make people’s comments on errors scare you away.

This is a great device no matter what you may read. And if you know basic things on a computer and the internet you can get around many of the “required” add-ons very easily.

Final Statement for Decision: If you like electronics with less features, that cost more, but is easy enough for a duck to use then get an Apply product. But if you want a device that gives you bang for your buck, has a long growing list of features, though it takes a little know-how, get the Archos.

This is great reading but I am totaly confused. All I want is something that works as I do a lot of travelling , watch a video, listen to music, send receive email, and do some surfingand maybe GPS. I dont know if I would buy the archos 5,7 or IPod touch or just go with a good book which I have done over the years.

i think this is pretty cool but when you pull it out of your pocket its like kind of lame to be seen by a huge device. I would buy the ipod touch even though it doesn’t have a lot of memory for my needs, but if you like laptops in your pocket then the Archos 5,7 is the right device for you.

    December 27, 2008 at 7:16 pm

This device is actually a tad bit obsolete due to it’s size. Every feature on here can be done with standard devices that the typical user would have.

First off email can be done on a cell phone. There is a huge variety of blackberry’s and other handsets that offer real-web browsing and email that supports either 3g or wi-fi connectivity. Depending on how much you use your cellular device and which service provider you choose a typical user can get a 3g phone with service for around seventy dollars a month. Most people would already have such a trendy phone anyway if they had the money for the Archos.

The size of the screen for movies is not that big of a deal either. Featuring you would only need such a large screen on long trips it could easily be replaced with either a Zune or and ipod and then buy video goggles from It would provide a 24 inch screen in front of your eyes. For general viewing on the fly (such as you are bored on the subway or whatever) a 3.2 inch screen is fine. The cost of these goggles and an Ipod with a decent amount of storage costs less then this one device. Also the average technophile will already have a large capacity music/video device. So they would only have to buy the video goggles for 99.00 dollars.

Games can be bought on either your cell phone or your ipod/zune. Besides if having a touch screen gaming device is so important then you probably already have a Nintendo ds which offers a huge variety of games that you can buy for next to nothing. The psp is also here and you can often buy a good used one for 100 dollars. Again if portable gaming is so important than a typical consumer already has such a device.

The storage space is impressive but not really a huge draw. If you are doing such travel to need email and internet browsing then you would bring a laptop. Unless you can listen/watch your entire video/music library in one go then it’s really just wasted space. Since many users have a backup usb hard drive for their files bringing your entire library in your laptop case isn’t a big deal featuring they are about the same size as the Archos 7.

Overall paying around 600 dollars to obtain an all in one device is silly featuring most people have devices already that can and surpass the abilities of the Archos 7.

I just purchased the Archos 7….it almost works but you you have to throw more money at it to get all the plug ins. I have a po box for an address. the site won’t allow a po box for credit card purchases, therefore, I can’t download ANY updates. The site is “coming soon” (for the past month). Tech suppoert won’t do anything to help me. They even told me to make a phony address for my credit card company to download their plug ins. NOT COOL!
The Wi Fi is terrible. disconnects when your not looking and for no reason. its not a timed thing…just turns off.
Run from this lead weight! Its a money pit!

In my opinion the Archos (at least the older models) has four advantages over for example the ipod 1. you do not need itunes (or WMP since you can use it as a hard drive) to transfer files.
    2. It plays subtitle files (which does not work on the Ipod).
    3. If you buy the plug-ins it plays almost every kind of video files (unlike the ipod or most portable dvd players)
    4. very easy to use tv docking station with remote in which you can just put the archos, push a button and it plays on the tv.

I went out on a limb and purchased one for my son, who is very tech-savy, for Christmas. I thought it was very impressed with it but he went NUTS over it…in a good way. I can maybe understand how some can get frustrated with it but he has purchased no add-on devices and has been able to do everything it is designed to do with relative ease. If he provides any additional feedback I will let you know. With my limited handling of it I have had no bad issues and had a blast using it. The battery charge lasted much longer than I thought it would be. I thought it would be like one of my many laptops that last for about 20 min. I saw the other comments about taking a long time to charge but we have not had any issues with that either. It is quite expensive but I will say it was worth every penny and goes down as one of my best Christmas present purchases yet.

Hey I just about to order the archos 7 . I’m really thinking it’s going to be good for me. I had an Ipod, but it broke of course. It was really old and I can’t see spending money on an Ipod when I can basically have a mini, touch screen COMPUTER! That I can put vids on which most I watch are supported by the archos. So what if they aren’t HD vids that I have to buy a plug-in for. I won’t buy the plug-in mostly because I’m sure the video won’t look terribly more “HD” on a 7inch screen. I mean c’mon how naive are you to think you can get real HD from a 7 inch screen. If you want HD buy a HD TV and get a HD service like direct T.V. or something. Only then will it be HD. The supported media formats are already what I watch or what you can convert DVDs to.
My only big hope for the archos 7 is intigrating the touch screen to use as a tablet for drawing. I’m an aspiring artist and a portable touch screen tablet would be sweet for graphics development. I already have bamboo drawing pen to boot, but this thing will be on the go. So lets see it hold 120gb o 320gb of files depending on how much your gonna drop for it. I think I’ll be happy with it as a PMP as well as it being so versatile for other capabilities.

Just taken delivery of my Archos 1.5 hours ago. I was registered and watching an internet TV clip within about 10 minutes of taking the box frm the postman. Yes you have to pay extra for a DVR dock and snap-on in order to be able record from TV/DVD and to playback on a large screen.

This is not a pocket device. This is a device for travelling either on your own or with a family. I travel a lot and I want to have a standlone device with movies, tv, music, podcasts and more stored in one place, capable of being hooked up to a big screen TV (such as when I’m on holiday) and capable of being plugged into my in car entertainment system.

That is what this is but, yes, be prepared to pay about another £100 for the plugins – hardware and software to make all these things happen. Docks, cables, software.

That it happens to do other things like Email is incidental.

I’ve had an Archos AV700 for three years and bought this as an upgrade. It is truly a next gen Archos, not something that could be said of recent Archos models released over the previous few years.

I am not a huge fan of Archos the company – their customer service was DREADFUL when I was trying to get my previous Archos repaired after I dropped it for the hundredth time – but unfortunately their devices are EXCELLENT.

  17. Jonathan
    January 27, 2009 at 3:46 pm

I’ve been debating whether or not to get the Archos 7, and this is what I concluded:
If I want a device for music and the occasional video, I want something that can easily fit into my pocket (i.e. itouch). But if I am looking for something larger, that I cannot fit into my pocket (and not use as frequently), it would be for travel purposes / novelty.
In that case, I would much rather buy a mini-notebook computer, which would have all of the capabilities of the Archos 7, plus a slightly larger screen, a full keyboard, way more capabilities (considering all of the software you can crunch into windows or linux), since I could download all of the codecs (and play ANY video and audio format without taking hours out of my life converting video), programs, emulators (and hook a 360 controller in for SNES), browse the web, AND, finally, play DVDs if I felt like getting a mini external DVD player. (I’m sure there is some way to download TV shows from the DVR to a laptop with a cable and some freeware.)
After all the research I’ve done, it makes absolutely no sense to spend all the money on the Archos 7 when a mini-notebook can do everything the Archos can at a comparable price (if not cheaper), and do a whole lot more.

Having read all the above, I can only say the the people who praise it are ringers from Archos. All the negative reviews are correct.

The Archos 7 is rubbish. I bought it 2 weeks ago, and it is still not functional as described, despit a number of tedious exchanges with Archos technical support (I use the term “support” loosley). After a very detailed mail sent to them explainng my problems, their response was “read the manual”! THIS IS NOT ACCEPTABLE!

I have also bought the docking device and that has not even been opened yet.

    1) the WIFI will not connect, and at last I have the admission from Archos that “there could be a

    2) No mention of any video converters was made when I purchased the thing. How can they market a device the requires standard files to go through a conversion system before they can be played.? Further, how can a company that tells you to surf the net for software to get their product working have any credibility? Why is the software not resident or provided on a disc? I am returning the device back to Dixons under the UK statutary consumer rights law for a full refund.

And before Didi (obviously a French Archos ringer), decides to comment on my ineptitude and lack of funds, I have sufficient means to buy anything I like, and as far as technical competance is concerned, I have a complete professional digital recording studio runing SONAR 8 Producer with a dedicated DAW and more interfacing devices than dear Didi knows exist. I work with integrated video and audio all the time. If really I wnted to I could solve the video problems myself, but why should I?

The WIFI is simply not fit for the pupose.

I should have simply bought a small computer with the same functionality and more built in (cheaper).

Verdict: Dont touch the Archos 7 with a barge pole it is, mis-represented under English law, it is only semi functional unless you are prepared to spend a lot of time, money and effort, it is grossly over priced and finally it is “merde” As I said mine is simply going back, and I will never touch Archos products again

  19. keys
    January 30, 2009 at 12:34 pm

Fistly I am not an Archos ringer, just a user. I purchased the Archos 7 late last year tor the dual purpose of backing up my Photos from my PCs Hard Drive ( you can never not back up) and a portable movie player. It plays all the files I need it too. Not had to convert any yet, but if I did it is quite easy as I have the software already ( There is even software freely available over the net. The quality of your conversion can depend on both the original source and the software and codecs you decide to use. I am not particularly tech savy but could easliy convert files if it became essential. In the future I may wish to convert MS-DVR files, but I am sure that will not be overly problematic.
On the whole my experience has been positive with the only problem being entering the Wifi password to logon (turns out it was my mistake) which is working fine now. I have not had to purchase any addons of any kind yet but if something usefull comes up then I will look at it.
Maybe my requirements are not very demandind but for me at least it does what it says on the tin.
As for Tony just because someone doesn’t agreed with you it does not mean they are wrong or a ringer. Like you its just an opinion based on their experience.
    Happy Archos user

Don’t think I have ever come across a review of a product with such a love/hate following. I just purchased a 7 today although if I had come across these reviews I’m not sure I would have. I will give further comment after I have set up the unit and tested it’s capabilities.

  22. Anonymous
    February 7, 2009 at 11:08 am

Following on from my comments yesterday –
The unit was on charge for 14 hours and still the charge light was not ‘flashing’ which is meant to signify full charge. Then I turned the unit on anyway (which the manual says not to do until the battery is fully charged – which is odd considering that when you at any time connect the unit to the mains it instantly powers up anyway) the battery icon was still flashing but when I disconnected the device from the mains power supply it said the battery was fully charged but reconnecting the power supplyagain the unit still said charging in progress – fault number 1
I spent over an hour this morning trying to get it to connect to my BT homehub WIFI – not possible – fault number 2 (I am an IT consultant and have set up 2 laptops and 2 desktops printer and fax on my home broadband network)
Every few2 minutes the unit does a full restart – fault number 3. And the user guide explains that pretty much all the software is beta and needs online upgrades and apparently once you manage to register the product online you then have to purchase additonal browser software to surf the net.
So it’s back to Argos with the beast today. I would recommend anyone to check out the blog if considering a similar purchase as there are many threads regarding the above comments.

I want a portable device that I can down load my DVD’s (Films) and put into files such as Thrillers, Epics, Action and Comedy. A device that the battery life will let me have the benifit of three watchable films before being drained. QVC recently offered the Archos 7 with addons for £426.25 and a battery life of 10 hrs. I don’t want to obtain a masters in ‘IT’ just something I can view when sat in a cigar shaped hull a mile or so above the Earth’s crust going faster than my old Ford Popular. The Archos 7 seemed to be just the thing, but I need reliablity. Before I couldn’t make my mind up but now I’m not so sure. Help.

    Oh dear,.

I do apologise but a lot of your comments are extremely novice. Why on earth would you get something like this if you barely know how to operate an mp3 player or an iPod Touch. The comments all seem the same “I didn’t read up on something before I bought it”. That’s your own fault. I however did a lot fo research, I now have an Archos 7 and can happily say it’s the ebst thing i’ve ever owned that is on such a portable but such a suer friendly level. The coment regarding the Internet and not being able to get online === Again a massive novice user who has probably locked himself out of his own wif. As for Codecs……you should of known this before you bought the thing, As for other people like this “Krista”. Get a job and sort your finances out. On a psychological level you couldnt afford to pay for something like this and this is why you’re complaining about it. Again, this is your own fault. I have to admit i’m ashamed by people who A: Don’t know how to use something B: Complaing they don’t know how to use something and C: Can’t be arsed to fix something. Thank you John K, a self apointed idiot who is cleverer than the lot of you. Shame on you all.

I’ve been charging my Archos for a long time now, It’s taking a while. It’s actually a long time. I then used it, guess what? I used it for around 6+ hours solid, i watched 2 Episodes of Heroes, 2 Lost, and Normal Edition Tower Towers and Return of the king. I then Charged it again. This time was shorter but it didnt lose the amount of charge. My initial rant was to all the people that didn’t give the Archos a chance, are too impaitient to learn and too stupid to think. I’ve downloaded films from the internet in an array of formats, i’ve found that out of the 30 tester films I randomly selected only 3 of them don’t work. The picture quality is fantastic, i’ve been to a pub and people are stunned at what they are seeing. Connectivity, if you have a Wifi connection set up it WILL connect effortlessly unless your Router or network settings are wrong. It’s not the Archos’ fault. I’ve used the Archos at my work, at my Home, at the pub for christ sake! it all works. Using pages, you double tap screen to zoom in, useful on facebook if you would like to using the chat facility. To scroll, apply sustained pressure when scrolling, (You ipod touch users know this don’t you *cough*) If you release it upwards it skips. release in the directiong your scrolling and Gently. Transfering files from pc to archos. It’s too easy so I wont even comment. Overall i’m a very satisfied user, it’s just what I want from an Archos 7″ screen size (Those people saying it’s too big are thick idiots). It’s user friendly, very user friendly in fact. I picked it up and was away. Internet, extremely easy, i was at home, it connected to the internet, i typed in my security key and there i was. google just like that. Registration made very easy. Transferring files across, again, very easy. (Oh btw, those IDOITS who say the USB connectivity and the kick stand are rubbish when you plug usb in……Did you know that when you plug the USB in on an Archos 7 it doesn’t allow you to use it when you’re transferring files… again, this is only a stupid thought by people that shouldn’t be allowed to breathe. So Picture 10/10. Connectivity 7 /10 – Lack of 3g on 7 is annoying as it was on 5. Storage 10/10. Misc (Accessories etc..) 7/10. All are nice touches just a shame they cost slightly more. However, if you’re not stupid and you read advice you can find new encoders online. Only drawback is time. however, if you’re like me and you work with computers at home then it’s nothing as you can run these in the background. Oh yeah, and if you’re a music engineer You’re really awesome because you still know nothing about computers. Thanks for this insightful and poweful debate which highlights how stupid people really are when it comes to new technology. It just goes to show how CRAP people are. LOL.

I ordered The Archos 7 320gb from Best Buy Feb 22 to get the “Geek Squad” 2 year warranty, still not in stock, back ordered. Went 2 the Archos website… they’re OUT OF STOCK also. So I Went to Amazon website they have several in stock. So i guess to get the extended warranty u gotta wait forever for them to get around to getting them in stock. Makes Me wonder if Archos Put a hold on Manufacturing the archos 7 due to some kind of software or hardware problem. But the archos 5 is available at Best Buy, Archos website, and Amazon… Hmmm!

Err, Shank your full of crippling nonsense. I got my Archos very easily. “Makes me wonder if people like you are fools?” If you bought it from a company that isnt Archos or another big company, don’t you think that loads of people are also going to try get this offer. Then, them being sold out would make sense. Secondly, probably because of the nature of the product they probably can’t afford to spend more money getting more in stock and covering a second, 3rd, 4th batch of these products with an exteneded geek squad warranty for these extra covers. Open your eyes and use them, buy from a large company that don’t offer stupid specialist deals. My Archos 7 is great. It IS everything it says it is, i’m still using it every day with no problems. If it needs to update firmware it does so automatically, so no, i don’t think theres a hardware problem shank.

The bottom line is this: Don’t buy this device.

A simple google search shows that a lot of people are having major issues with this device and you don’t get this much negativity with a sound product.

There are far better products on the market at the moment. Just search around.

I have been looking for MP3/MP4 player for some time. WiFi sounds good but after I looked at the money I will spend I felt a small laptop would be better.
Also Asus might have something to really look at.

I will never own a icrap… I will also look into Cowon S9 as I only lose some space and WiFi. For the money the Cowon D2+ looks very good. From what I read the Cowon has the best sound also.

For movies I will stick with my portable dvd player.

Maybe you should go back to school yeah…or probably, for the sake of this post and any future nonsense coments you make in life, probably be better if you went and died.

The problem is I’ve up my mind a 10000% that I am gonna buy the Achos 7 end of July, but some of the comments just make me worry if I will get all the pleasure out of it especially with regards to the internet. Will I be able to surf the net EVERYWHERE in the world where I travel, even in South Africa when I go for the world Cup? Can I connect a printer, mouse or an external keyboard without any problems? I dont care if it is a £700 (including all the extras) waste, Im going to get me the Archos 7, even if it is only for the long flights.

there is nothing like archos 7 on the market .notebooks or tablets get very warm after a few minutes. the equivalent size tablet pc computer i.e. fujitsu can do more but cost over 1500 us dollars and get warm after a few minutes of use. I think archos 7 should have more ram to make faster reading pdf files and that would reduce accessing hard drive too frequently and it would be less crash prone

    Hello Archos

Have bought your flagship Archos 7 unit…very beautiful!
Noticed your Archos 5’s have Brightness/Contrast settings!
Why does not the Archos 7 flagship model have them also???…
Your previous model the Archos 705 Wi-Fi had them…..
Why not 7 model too…..just like the 705’s????….
Is it possible to make a firmware…which includes the
Brightness/Contrast settings to be on the Archos 7????….

    Dear Customer,

The screen of the Archos 7 and the Archos 5 are not the same and are not using the same technology.

    Kind Regards,
    Archos Technical Support.

    Archos Team.

Not the same technology…u gotta be kidding me!!!…
Archos 5 & 7 are identical in every possible way!
Except only for screen size resolutions!
    Technology is identically the same….fullstop!!!…
What….do you think l am studid or something!!!…
    Check out your own specifications!!!!…..
Why…l do not understand….for the life of me….
you would take away brightness/Contrast settings
from the flagship…most expensive model in your
PVP line-up l do not know….but….l think you
need to rectify this problem….as many movies
have to much whiteout in them…and the great
    Brightness/Contrast settings rectify this problem!
Archos….l payed big dollars for your flagship 7!!!!…
    How about giving me….and others….our money’s worth!

    Looking forward to your reply.
    Thank you.

Ok from what i have read this item has a lot of computing power and has potential. if it realy has this many problems it may be a hasle. i will just buy a ipod touch. i may buy one later though. this would be a good item if you are good with computer stuff as i am. i beleve the problem with it isnt the devise itself its the fact that its running Linux in the background as firmware. linux works great if you know how to write some code and get around things but its not for the everyday user. if your a programer you can utilize he combined power of a 1ghz proccesor in a portable touchscreen device. if your not good with computers DONT BUY THIS ITEM!!!

Folks, I think that if you load the movies and songs as a version the Archos understand, it will play everything fine.
I am waiting on mine from Amazon and if it gives me shit, it will go back but I do many movies in the computer and have a very good movie converter program. This is the same for music.
As with anything, if your DVD player does not play Bluray, then you don’t place that disk in the player…
And as is with any computer, who did not have to download a plug-in for use.
I guess I will see and get back with everyone.

I thing I am confused on in all these discussions though. Why would anyone compare the Itouch to the 7? I would get sick of watching a video on a 2″ screen I assure you…

    Hello all,

It’s been well, quite a few months since I made my first comment back in Feb about my Archos 7. I carry the thing everywhere I go still, it’s still working, the battery life seems to be improving (?) and it’s excellent,

Screen is still perfect touch screen is still awesome.

So, I repeat to all this idiots who can’t use this simple piece of kit, get yourself an Ipod because your money isn’t good enough for this brilliant bit of kit. You don’t deserve it.

Itouch, great bit of kit, shit screen shit size. Archos a lot of cash but 100% enjoyment, usability, connectivity, adaptability.

Only thing that lets it down is it’s too big to fit in your pocket. *boo hoo* lol, idiots.

So, if you’re a fan of great technology and want a reliable bit of kit (don’t forget i’ve used it pretty much every day for both music ..great speakers and headphones and for video entertainment.

It’s been 6 months guys. ^^ I’ll update you in another 6 months.

Best purchase ever. Well done Chaz for changing your ways lol

This has nothing to do with reviewing Archos products, but I thought some things should be pointed out to you and the moderators of this forum. You have some very serious anti-social and anger management issues that should be addressed with a mental health professional.

I would like to highlight some of your extremely condescending and acerbic statements:

“a lot of your comments are extremely novice”

“just a shame about all you idiots”

“better if you went and died”

“you should go back to school”

“people saying it’s too big are idiots”

“those IDOITS who say the USB…”

“a stupid thought by people that shouldn’t be allowed to breathe”

“However, if you’re not stupid and you read…”

“highlights how stupid people really are”

“just goes to show how CRAP people are”

“I repeat to all this idiots who can’t use this…”

    “You don’t deserve it.”

Anders, I think you have some extremely serious issues that should be addressed immediately. Naturally, your hatred of others is only a reflection of your own fears and how you feel about yourself. Psychology 101. An old saying: a thief will tell you of his crimes when he calls you a thief.

To anyone who knows Anders personally, you should very seriously consider contacting his/her family for a possible intervention. This much loathing of others has the propensity to lead to violence. If you think I am joking in any way, you would be wrong.

  54. Dave
    September 7, 2009 at 11:31 am

Rob yous a massive nob, Anders is only talking the truth, a lot of these people should no comment on this site and neither should you,

For you to then come totally off topic is again something the mods should be aware of and for you to then say someone has mental health issues isn’t far.

If you notice Chaz’s long list of nonsense you’ll notice it’s all waffle and euro tosh.

If i were you I would stop evaluating people as you obviously don’t have anything to live for if all you cna do is judge overs.

“Judge others as you would like to be judged”

Deary me Robert – You are a fcking psycho.

Purchased the 504 three years ago.Best gadget ive purchased and ive got Nanos and an ipod video.I purchased the add on via archos which was very easy.Personally i didnt mind at the time.
I use the 504 EVERYDAY i kid you not.I bought the dvr station in duty free two years ago and got it a bit cheaper.Theres only one gripe the remote on the dvr is very slow obviously the sensor on the dvr is not very good.
Ive upgraded the software via the archos site a few times and ive got to say ive never had a problem with the site. The only reason ive looked at these reviews is that i am now considering to purchase the 7.I was a bit shocked by the reviews but im going to go ahead as the 504 has been worth every penny over the last three years.
    I dont work for archos wish i did i could of done with some staff discount!Seriously though like anything new its always the case of cracking on and getting the hang of it{as i never read manuals!}

I have a 404 (4 inch scree) and I am looking to upgrade to one that has Wifi. I work nights and want to be able to watch vedios from websites like Hulu and Netflix.

My question is… does this one work with websites like Hulu, Netflix and the national tv sites like ABC, NBC and such.

I really love my 404 but I am in the market for a larger screen with Wifi and I was looking for something other than a laptop.

Mine is a question reagarding the Archos 7, can you get a TV snapon for it to play the freeview channels, I know you can for the Archos 5, I don’t want to but the 7 then find tha’t you can’t get it.

  63. December 4, 2009 at 7:24 pm

Actually the serial number IS on the archos 7 itself a tiny sticker at the right hand side of the bottom (that is the thin bottom edge not the back) the sticker has one of those square code thingies that some mobiles can read. On the 5 it is on the back.

ok I bought my archos 7 so I could have much of my music collection in full audio format (aif or wav) rather than listen to aac files on my ipod. as a dj, I love my music n audio quality is a big thing. so, 320gig is awesome, bring it on. I have a few issues, I figure most of it has to do with my computer operating system (mac) as there is little if no support for this. I have all my music on iTunes, properly categorised with album covers etc n other lil info like bpm n key in the track title…

first problem, there are no ‘mac’ aiff drivers on archos, so I had to convert all my music to WAV. however this strips the album cover from the file. not good…I’ve heard the image can be embedded to the folder but dunno how…

second, it doesn’t recognise the track data for compilation albums…ie, the folder structure for a compilation is just the same as an artist album, so on the archos all I see is the compilation name and the track name, no artist info. another bummer…

so ah yeah, a lil distressed on spending a lotta coin on this n not utilising it. its a damn wicked lookin unit, display is ace n the sound is great. but I just wish it was compatible with iTunes so I could copy all my music over n be done with it. considering its a linux-based system I was surprised it wasn’t somewhat more compatible with mac. anyhow, if anyone out there has any info on how I can make it all happen I’d be so very much appreciative. at the moment, without said fixes, my archos is being relegated to a movie player when I go on holidays…damn shame when I know it can do so much more…

I bought the Archos 7 320 GB for $549.00 in August of 2009 and I am and then bought the DVR station and send the DVR station back because it would not work at all. I am so sorry that I bought this piece of shit that won’t even play my videos. I purchased the plug-in from Archos to play my videos and I did not get the Down Load from them after paying for it twice, so I called my credit card company and ask for a refund on the plug-ins. We all should sue the fuckers and don’t buy anything from them every. After I bought it for $549.00, now you can get them for about half that price new. I wish there were hacks that I could install whatever the hell I want to on this thing.

im so confused when people mention small video players NOONE mentions the zune, always the ipon (zune HD is far superior)
    anyway back to the archos
this is my take, you need some tech savvy about you, or its gonna cost you money for plugins, however if you are tech savvy, you wont need any as the reviewer earlier rightly said. There are many formats of video, NOT JUST THE ONES YOU HAVE TO PAY FOR THE PLUGINS FOR, and MANY MANY types of software to convert. How many people use the itunes store or the zune store? not me thats for sure, yet I have 30gb of video on my zune
Before you review please be clear that you NEED to do some research on how to create encode etc a movie that will play WITHOUT a plugin and trust me………….its really really not hard!!
and the guy saying this is obselete becaudse of its size, thats talking a little strange you think thats like saying a 55 inch lcd or plasma tv is obselete because its too big. EVERY PROFESSIONAL reviewer rates this as fantastic because of the screen size
I got my archos 7 on ebay for $299
    best $300 ive spent

Krista couldn’t have said it better. The Archos 7 is a big ripoff and I can’t wait for a hack to be available. What is the sense of putting the internet on the Archos 7 if its not going to support Flash 9 videos like on You Tube which is also on the unit. It doesn’t make sense. Archos just lost another customer and I’m going to complain to the BBB and you should too.

Owned my 7 for a few months. I owned a AV140 for 7 yrs before it stoped working.Sent it in to Archos for repair. To old to fix.My biggest beaf is Archos support. If you call can count on being on hold everytime for atleast 20-30 mins!!!! The Archos support on-line and with phone calls are totally worthless. Dont waste your time with those boo-zoos.I truely think there is only one worker working there. They suck

I had read a few reviews on the Archos and it seemed to be everything that you’d want from a media player, which is why I purchased it. I travel quite a bit and wanted something to store movies and music on. Somewhere in the comments a couple of people mentioned about just using a laptop which has a larger screen and more features, while true the battery life would only last for one maybe two films. So the Archos is better here.

The wireless I had no problems with at all its picked up home and public networks just fine. Web browsing seems to work well and the screen is a decent enough size to make it quite useable. The email setup works well and was easy to configure, although I probably won’t use it often because my phone is setup for this already, but it is handy for viewing pdf/image attachments. The interface for managing email is clunky but does work.

The big disappointment is the poor support for video formats, given that this is a core function of a media player I find it totally outrageous you should have to pay to effectively install additional codecs.

There were a few people making the point that you should do your research before buying to find out what’s supported and what’s not. They were fairly critical of people without a good understanding of video formats, I think this is a little unfair, why should you be expected to know this? Great if you do, you’ll be able to convert your videos to the right format with some free tools to avoid purchasing add-ons, but for the average user that doesn’t want to waste time learning about video formats and converting there existing files to another format it’s a real let down. If it was made clear in the marketing that video support is very poor and you’ll need to waste hours converting files to actually use your device without having to pay for add-ons then fair enough, but its not.

Over all a great product that will be ideal for keeping you entertained while travelling or commuting that has been spoilt with rubbish support for video formats, if they just sorted that out and provided a large range of free codecs it would be just about perfect.

Thanks for the comments, I was nearly to bite the cheese and get trapped with it…

I’ve tested one of those at MediaMarkt, and it was big shit. Screen is resistive and takes a lot to response finger touchs. Battery… what to mention…. if not connected current electricity.. the machine was saying good bye!

Archos needs a lot of improvement and lower down prices… Put it side by side with ipad…

its a bout time that Archos spent some of the money they make selling this junk they have the nerve to call an ARCHOS 7 MEDIA TABLET are they having a laugh youtube is one of the main MEDIA ATTRACTIONS on the web and it wont play any of the videos straight of that’s because it needs an Adobe flash player update well Archos you have the money go spend it on the update you could always recover it by charging for the codex now there is an original idea or has that been tried before and for those about to purchase the newish Archos 5 with Google Android it wont play youtube either better go bye something else with a descent apps background get my drift at least when you switch it on it stays on and wont shut down just as you are about to read the e-mails the best bit is the screen pity the rest is so useless should have kept my money and spent it on something more deserving of my hard earned cash like my car Archos do yourself a favour and drop the MEDIA PLAYER CONSEPT IT IS HOWEVER AN OVER PRICED PIECE OF RUBBISH THAT IS NOT FIT FOE PURPOSE

This product is pretty bad. Will not take a charge, period. Not from the USB, not from the AC adaptor. That makes it pretty hard to fully charge on the first use, ya think? Now, nobody’s perfect right? They should have a chance to make good. So try calling the toll free support line. Wait, the toll free line is disconnected! How about email support you ask? Well, I’ll let you know if I ever hear from them but don’t hold your breath.

This must be a sponsored review – this tablet is seriously lacking in every respect – I received one as a gift and after a week of evaluating it, gave it to my 9yr old to use as a large screen for her Barbie setup. How can you recommend this!! I have also have both Ipads so it’s a matter of my being techno challenged. This thing is pure and simply, garbage.

If you want to have a reputation as a trusted site I suggest you keep it honest.
