Review of Songmics Six Piece Gardening Set

songgarden4
We cover lots of things here on Technogog, technology and things for the home and even for the garden. I love technology but I also do enjoy a little bit of gardening every year, mostly flowers but sometimes vegetables too. Even though I enjoy doing it I’ve never really owned a decent set of gardening tools, I’ve picked up cheap ones at the dollar store but they usually only last one year. I was recently invited to review a six piece set from a company called Songmics and I’m very happy I agreed to do it as it’s a great set of tools that I’ve come to find very handy for working in the garden. The Review

The set of tools comes individually wrapped in plastic for protection, other that there’s no other labeling or markings on them.

The pruner is small at about 7.5 inches long and it opens up about .75 inches so you won’t be cutting large branches but it’s fine for basic pruning of plants and such. The pruner does have a strong spring between the handles that makes them spring open, there’s also a lock on the top edge that will keep the jaws closed when you’re not using them. A friend of ours actually used these to take some cutting of some flowers I have near the railing of our steps, they worked great so she now has cutting to start her own flowers.

The weeding fork looks like a big fork really with three tines on it that are very slightly curved. The total length is about 11 inches and it seems very sturdy. I found this tool very useful for breaking up lumps of soil and for mixing the dirt. I save my coffee grounds and mix it in with the soil and this worked great for that. I mix new bags of potting soil with the dirt from my pots and planters and with the coffee grounds every year and then I use the extra for other plants around the yard.

The rake or what they call the cultivator hand rake is just what it sounds like a small rake with three tines bent at a 90 degree angle so you can rake and pull the dirt with it. I used the rake as well for mixing the soil and it worked great for breaking up the ground soil to make it easier to plant in and then mix my coffee/soil mixture in with it.

The weeder tool is something I’ve never used before, something I never knew existed as I just used my hands to pull weeds. It’s about 11 inches long and it has s split front so you can get down in the dirt and onto the weeds to pry then out of the ground from the roots. It takes a bit to get accustomed to using but it does work well, not sure though how much I’ll use it as I just prefer to use my hands.

The transplanting trowel or shovel really is marked in centimeters and inches so you can see the depth to make transplanting easier. The blade is thin at slightly over 2 inches across and it is about 6.5 inches long with the handle being just over 5 inches long for a total length of about 11.5 inches.

The hand trowel is basically just a small shovel that just has all sorts of uses, it’s probably the one things I used the most out this set as it’s great for moving dirt, breaking up dirt and digging holes of course. The length is about 11 inches and the blade is just under 3 inches across.

Conclusion

For the price I think this set is very much worth it, they’re very well made and the handles are comfortable to use them all day long.

All of the tools are aluminum which makes them easy to clean but the best part is they won’t rust as you’re using them in the soil and chances are they’re going to get wet and dirty.

I should note that I did break one of the tines off of the weeding fork but it was no fault of the product, I was trying to dig up a rock I ran across and it was bigger than I thought and broke the fork using it to try and pry the rock out. So don’t use it that way or it make break. See More.

Pros:
+Comfortable rubber non-slip handles
+Inexpensive for the set
+Aluminum
+Very useful set
Cons:
-None so far
