If you glance at how far technology has come in the past decade, you’ll quickly realize that the things we take for granted today were oftentimes thought to be pretty much impossible back then. This is true for a variety of things, from the laptops we use on a daily basis, to the technology you’ll find in your car, such as motion gestures to control the radio. Yes, things are evolving rather rapidly, and that’s not going to stop.
We’re constantly seeing new technologies and technological improvements make our lives easier, and that’s absolutely true in the world of smart home security systems, too. There’s no denying that security was present in our homes years ago, but the truth is that it wasn’t nearly as advanced and useful as it is today. Yes, the fundamentals are more or less the same, but all of the advancements in the world of technology allow us to fell a lot more secure in our own homes.
So, what exactly are those technologies, and how are we taking advantage of them? Read on, and let’s find out.
Home Automation Goes a Long Way
Quite possibly the most obvious advancement is home automation. It’s been around for quite a while, but it wasn’t until recently that it started to get incorporated in home security systems. However, today, having a system that has some kind of home automation integrated is something you should definitely consider.
To begin with, this gives you the possibility to integrate your home’s lighting with your other security devices, such as your smart locks and cameras. You can also set up an advanced schedule and scenes, which lets you easily create the impression that someone is home, even if you’re halfway across the world. To add to this, it only takes a few taps on your phone, so it’s rather simple. We also mentioned smart locks, and video doorbells are right up there with them, too. These devices can not only give you a complete overview of your front (and back) door, but also allow you to remotely restrict, or allow access from wherever you are. Add to this a couple of motion sensors, and you’ll also know if someone is snooping around your yard, too, within a couple of moments of that happening.
Cameras Have Improved Significantly
When you think about home security, one of the first things that spring to mind is cameras. They’re pretty much the basic component of any home security system, and they give you the most in terms of functionality. And a decade ago, cameras were pretty simple. They recorded footage at decent quality, and they stored it on some kind of recording device that you could access physically and review said footage. However, you couldn’t access them remotely, for example, and you couldn’t download the recorded footage on your phone in an easy way.
Today, that has changed. Smart cameras are connected to the internet, and they work in a similar, yet critically different way to those of ten years ago. The footage isn’t stored on DVRs anymore, but instead, on the cloud. You can access the footage from pretty much anywhere, at any time, since it’s online and always available. To add to this, the fact that your cameras are connected to the internet means that you can connect to them from pretty much anywhere in the world, and all you need is your phone and a working internet connection. Just about any smart home security camera will come with an app that will let you connect to it, and there’s a big chance you can download footage or capture photos at any moment if necessary. But that’s not the most important benefit you’ll be getting.
The key thing is the notifications. Most of these cameras come with motion detection systems that know when someone is moving in front of them. If you’ve set your system to know you’re not at home, yet someone is moving on your porch, or in your back yard, where you’ve set up cameras, the camera will know something is going on. In a matter of seconds, you’ll receive a notification on your phone, and you’ll get the ability to tap into your camera’s feed instantly, so you can see what’s going on. Even if you don’t take advantage of the other things we mentioned, this one is truly a gamechanger, and one of the greatest benefits that come as a result of recent technological advancements.
All that’s left for you to do is to invest in a smart home security system that allows you to take advantage of the things we just spoke about. It might be pricey, but it is definitely worth it, and when you think about it, you can’t really put a price on living in a safe home and sleeping peacefully, can you?
