If you haven’t noticed, I haven’t been around for a bit, Tom did a good job filling in for me though. The reason I was MIA is that my Mother died last Monday and it was a bit rough on everyone, still is and will be for some time to come, but life has to go on right?…
So I’m easing back into the swing of things here with a brief review of a rather interesting little product, it’s one of those types of products that makes you say "Why didn’t I think of that?"
Today for review I’ve got a small and simple product that’s very useful, and well made. It’s called the Latosta Portable Laptop Stand, it’s from a company called Starlight Creations, and I have to say it’s the most potable laptop stand I have ever seen, it’s so small that you can easily fit it into your pocket. The Latosta is made of stainless steel making it very tough, virtually indestructible really, it’s very easy to use, and it’s inexpensive as well.
So continue on to learn more…
No video for you today…
The Latosta Laptop Stand comes in very minimal packaging, a plastic ziplock baggie with a paper insert in it, and the product of course.
There are two main parts to the stand and they are stainless steel ‘S’ shapes pieces, each have rubber tips on their ends. Included is an extra set of tips as well in black so you can use red or black tips on the laptop keyboard side.
Specifications:
Latosta Portable Laptop Stand: Better Laptop Ergonomics, Improved Laptop Cooling, small enough to take anywhere.
The Latosta portable laptop stand is made of 304 stainless steel and is almost indestructible. Simply place one stand on each side of the keyboard, and slide the stand up or down to adjust to the desire angle: The lift at the back of the keyboard will vary based on the keyboard thickness and length. The adjustment range on an Apple MacBook (keyboard thickness 0.690") is approx 1 1/4" in the low position to 2 1/8" in the high position. Your laptop will be very stable on the Latosta stand.
Why use a portable laptop stand for your notebook computer?
Better Laptop Ergonomics, Improved laptop cooling and small enough to take with you anywhere . . .
Better Laptop Ergonomics: As you can see from the pictures below, by lifting the screen and tiling the keyboard, it is easier on the neck and wrists, keeping the body in a more natural position. In the picture on the left, the wrists are more bent, even though the shoulders are drawn up toward the ears. The neck is tilted forward, requiring more effort to hold that position. Using a portable laptop stand can alleviate all of these problems. Better Laptop Ergonomics means less stress on your body, making long hours on the computer easier to deal with.
Improved laptop cooling : When a laptop is on a table, the heat gets conducted into the table and has no easy way to dissipate. Using a portable laptop stand will lift up the keyboard allowing air to circulate freely underneath, resulting in the heat dissipating into the air. Improved laptop cooling may increase battery life.
The Latosta portable laptop stand promotes laptop cooling passively instead of using fans. This puts less load on the batteries, is completely quiet and provides a much cooler laptop for most users compared to using the laptop on a table.
Small enough to take with you: For those that use their laptop in multiple locations, a stand must be easily transportable, and we offer the smallest, lightest, most portable laptop stand on the market today. Our stand is only 2 oz. and fit easily into a shirt pocket.
Compare our size, weight, strength, good looks & price to any other portable laptop stand. Add the improved laptop ergonomics making it easier on your body, and improved laptop cooling and we think you’ll see why the Latosta portable laptop stand is the best choice!
Installation couldn’t be easier really, just slip them on and you’re set
There is mention on their website about not being compatible with certain laptops, specifically those with keyboard that end very close to the edge of the top casing, I though this might be a problem with mine, but happily it wasn’t.
To adjust the height of the Latosta stand you just slide it along the slides of your laptop, even then it did not interfere with the keys on the edge of the keyboard of my laptop.
There was also mention that the stands could possibly block certain ports on your laptop, with this configuration of stand it’s pretty much inevitable really though, and yes it did block the PCMCIA port on my laptop. To me though this isn’t much of a problem, the only thing I have in there right now is a card reader and the stand did not block the opening.
As for cooling abilities, I really saw no noticeable differences in temperatures while using the Latosta, but I did notice that the fans did not come on as often as if my laptop were flat on the table, so obviously it’s doing something there.
The stands themselves are very well made, they are stainless steel after all and are very hard to bend, I can easily see them holding the heaviest of laptops with no problems. They should also withstand the abuse of being tossed around in your laptop bag or pocket very well also. The only concern I have is the small tips on the top side of the stand, they can be easy to lose if they happen to come off, but they do provide a second set for you which is nice.
The angle that the laptop sits at for the lowest position is fine for typing, I actually thought it was going to be much higher, but it’s just right actually. You can of course easily adjust the height to fit your needs. My laptop seemed to be well balanced as well on the stands, I had no fear of it falling over even at a higher angle.
Conclusion:
The Latosta Potable Laptop Stand is an awesome little product really, so simple yet very useful. It provides a great way to make your laptop more comfortable to work with, while at the same time allowing airflow under it to help keep it cool.
There really are no Cons to this product, I could say it doesn’t work with all laptops, but many products are like that so it’s not a big deal.
The Latosta is inexpensive as well, they’re running a special until March 1st actually where they’re offering it for only $9.95, which I think is well worth the cost.
