For climbers the carabiner can be the difference between life and death. For the rest of us it serves as multipurpose utility device. It offers a host of numerous uses such as organizing keys, keeping multiple items together such as shopping backs, functioning like a ring to use as a hook plus hundreds of other functions.
Today’s review item takes the carabineer and modifies it for one more bit of functionality. Nomad has created the NomadClip for GoPro which functions as a regular carabiner while also housing a hidden mini USB cable. This carabiner allows the user to charge their GoPro camera or mini USB port enable device such as DSLR cameras.
It is sturdy and rugged designed to be used in most any environment. Clip it onto your bag or backpack and never fret about being in need of a mini USB cable again.
Unboxing
The NomadClip for GoPro arrives in a plain brown cardboard package with the Nomad name printed on the box. Opening the package reveals the NomadClip by itself. Although the clip use is fairly self explanatory there are no instructions or any other packaging found inside the box.
For those unfamiliar with carbiners here is a diagram of the anatomy of one such clip.
This carabiner clip is composed of a polycarbonate plastic over laying the reinforced stainless steel that makes up the clip itself. Printed on one side of the NomadClip for GoPro are Nomad logo and on the opposite the words – “not for climbing” since this carabiner is not designed to support the bodyweight of a human being.
The NomadClip for GoPro measures 8 x 4.2 x 1.3 cm and weighs 53 grams. At opposite sides of the carabiner’s spine two hidden ends of a mini USB Cable. Towards the top of the frame is the USB connector that plugs into the AC adapter or PC/Mac USB port. While the mini USB connector is located near the rivet pin area. Each of these connectors pushes into the NomadClip and are unnoticeable when engaged.
The NomadClip is compatible with GoPro Hero cameras models from Hero 2 through Hero 4 as well as all Canon or Nikon DSLRs and any mini USB capable device.
Specifications and Features
To use the NomadClip for GoPro simply expose the ends of the cable away from the caribiner and plug them into your GoPro and power source. One drawback to the cable is that it is very short so keep that in mind when needing to charge your mini USB enabled device. Once done the ends of the cables locks securely back into the NomadClip for GoPro.
Speaking with my contact from Nomad, I was informed that the NomadClip for GoPro is not waterproof but is water resistant and should be no worse for wear if caught in the rain.
The hinge on the NomadClip is strong and will keep the carabiner closed holding it attached contents in securely in place. While it is bulky the clip itself is rather lightweight.
Conclusion
The NomadClip for GoPro is a novel way to carry around a cable that many folks require for charging their portable devices. Why carry around a loose cable when you have a more utilitarian option? By incorporating the mini USB cable into a carabiner you gain a multitude of uses for a device you need on a regular basis.
It is priced at $29.95, which is definitely steep if this was just a mini USB cable but since incorporating a carabiner it is now a multipurpose device making it a much better value. It is now a device that can be used in day-to-day activities whether it is carrying keys hooked onto pants or a bag, attaching extra items to a backpack, you will definitely find a use for the NomadClip for GoPro.
As a GoPro user there have been a few times where I forgot my Mini USB cable in the past and regretted that mistake. With the NomadClip for GoPro that occurrence is less likely to occur in the future.
