Review of D-Link Wi-Fi AC750 SharePort Go III Router and Charger

Testing and Usage Continued

The three primary network modes are Hotspot, Router and Mobile Router. The last works with USB cellular modems to create a wireless network. Unfortunately I was unable to test this capability. The Hotspot and Router features were simpler to test and both worked as advertised.

As a router D-Link Wi-Fi AC750 held its own when compared to a Netgear Nighthawk R7000. Obviously the D-Link model is a travel router and is not as robustly designed for heavy-duty networking; however, when testing with Speedtest there was no discernable difference between the two routers on a FIOS connection.

I was also able to test the SharePort Go III on an Optimum Online network against a Western Digital AC1300 router and speeds were comparable as well.  Using a MacBook Air I was able to take advantage of 802.11ac speeds.

The SharePort Go III (DIR-510L) can double as a remote storage and media player similar to the Kingston MobiileLite Wireless. Using the mydlink SharePort app on iOS I was able to wireless view videos, listen to music, check documents and review photos. Of course playback of media is limited to the device it is viewed upon. iOS devices were limited to .mp4 and .mov files as there is no avi or divx capability. When connecting to the SharePort Go III via the web interface other media formats were easily played back.

The one complaint I have with the mydlink SharePort app is that it does not seem as polished as the Kingston MobileLite version. The D-Link app seems rather simplistic and does not have a modern app aesthetic especially on iOS.

To charge your iPhone or Android phone using the SharePort Go III move the mode switch to the Charger position and then plug the phone into the 1 amp USB port while 500 mA one is used for connecting USB storage devices. Just don’t go too crazy with what you connect to the device, as it may not be able to handle too much power draw according to the D-Link manual:

If you have attached one or more USB devices (such as a 2.5” US B drive) that draws a total of 0.7A or more power, the power adapter will not supply enough voltage to charge the DIR-510L while simultaneously powering the USB devices. Check your USB devices’ power usage specifications and disconnect if necessary.

I was able to recharge a iPhone 5S from 15% to full capacity in about two hours with 40% capacity remaining on the SharePort Go III while the power hungry iPad Air charged to about 45% from 10% while draining out the SharePort Go III battery completely.
