having a computer means having a desk lamp and I think that’s something that a lot of people really don’t think about, a good desk lamp is something that everyone needs and as technology has improved lamps are getting nicer and nicer and with LEDs, they’re getting more power efficient. Today for review I’ve got the TaoTronics LED Desk lamp which is beautiful piece of technology, it’s well made and it has a brushed aluminum finish that makes it looks that much nicer. The lamp has a touch sensitive control panel so you can control the modes and brightness of the lamp with just a touch. The lamp also has a secondary LED which acts as a nightlight and there’s even a timer built-in. It’s a very nice lamp for sure. Read on to learn more…
Specifications and Features
Once you open the box and get everything unpack you’ll find the lamp wrapped in plastic for further protection along with a user guide, cleaning cloth and power supply.
The lamp ships folded down, it folds in three sections essentially, the base, arm, and the light section itself. The lamp is heavy overall and it looks nice, it’s made of aluminum with a brushed finish. The lamp would fit fine in an office or your home really. When fully opened the lamp is about 17.75 inches tall from the back to the top of the arm while it is in the horizontal position as it would most likely be as a lamp. The light arm section of the lamp can actually rotate upwards to almost a 45 degree angle making the full height of the lamp up to about 29 inches.
The lamp connects to the base at a swivel point so you can turn the whole arm to position it as you need it and where you need the light.
The lamp has a single USB port on the left side so you can charge your phone or whatever, it’s rated for 5 volts and 2 amps. On the back edge is where you’ll find the power connection to connect the included power adapter.
The bottom of the lamp has the ID tag and the majority of the border of it is a non-slip material to keep the lamp in place where you put it. The base is rectangular in shape and it’s about 5.25 x 7.25 inches in dimensions and about 1 inch thick at the thickest part as it is wedge shaped so it tapers down towards the front, going from about 1 inch to about .75 inches.
The actual light section is flat as it is LEDs and it looks almost futuristic. The light section can be rotated to aim the light where you need it at your desk.
The controls for the lamp are touch sensitive, on the base is a glass possibly, section where the controls are. The controls are pictures and above them is a slider that you can touch or slide your finger across to adjust the brightness of the lamp. The controls from left to right are power, coffee cup, book, person, clock and moon. Power is self-explanatory obviously. The coffee cup and book are for adjusting the light levels or colors with five light modes to pick from. The person with the heart icon is for favorite, you can set the light how you want and then save it as your favorite so you can pick it whenever you want to. The clock is the timer which which starts a sixty minute timer. The moon icon is to turn on the nightlight. I really like the slider to adjust the brightness levels, you can slide or just touch, I used it every night to adjust the brightness. When I was watching a movie in the evening I’d lower the brightness as you can get glare from the light depending on how close it is to your monitor and what type of monitor you have, some have a glossy finish which can really cause glare.
The light modes go from a clear bright white daylight to a more softer yellowish and then everything in-between, or at least five levels of in-between. You can’t see any individual LEDs when the light is on, it looks like a flat panel of light and I like this look a lot. The lamp does give off a lot of light when it’s on its highest setting, more than enough for anything you need to do on your desk and even to take pictures by. I should note the top section of the lamp can get quite warm to the touch but not overly hot.
The nightlight is located on the bar to the side and behind the main light. The nightlight isn’t very bright, but it’s not supposed to be either as it’s a nightlight. I tested the nightlight out but really didn’t use it honestly as I like the dark.
Conclusion
The TaoTronics lamp is gorgeous really, it might even be considered a work of art or an art piece, this lamp looks very nice and it’s just very well made.
The lamp features plenty of options that are all controlled with an easy to use touch sensitive panel.
The lamp has a built-in timer and even a nightlight if you have a need for one.
Just an observation or personal critique here, but I wish the lamp was a bit taller, it’s kind of short for me. The last lamp I had was tall and it reached over top of my 27” monitor which is on a small platform stand and that was perfect for me, but this once just barely reaches over my 23” monitor that doesn’t have a stand. It works but it’s just not ideal for me personally, just something to keep in mind.
