Up for review today I’ve got something a little different, it’s a radio but not just any radio it’s a world radio or shortwave radio that you can take camping with you to monitor the weather or just use around the house to listen to channels from around the world. The radio is from a company called Tecsun and it’s the model R-909 and it has 9 bands so it can receive lots of signals from all over the place. Specifications and Features

 

 

 

The radio is black in color and it’s made of plastic but it’s surprisingly good quality. I was honestly surprised when I opened the package at the quality of this radio, it’s finished nicely, no extra plastic or anything like that. The radio is about 5 inches by 3 inches in size and about 1.25 inches thick at the thickest point where the antenna comes out on the back. The radio only has a single speaker on the left side and then the right has an analog tuner.

 

The tuner has lots of frequencies to select from. Under the tuning section you’ll find a sliding switch to select distant or local signals and then two buttons for MW and FM.

 

 

On the op you can see the antenna which is telescopic up to 20.5 inches long so you should be able to get decent reception. The top is also where you’ll find the slider for band selection with eight choices that correspond to the tuner frequencies.

 

On the left side is the volume/power knob along with a power input for optional power adapter and a headphone jack.

 

On the right side is the tuning knob along with where the wrist strap comes out.

 

The back is where the battery compartment is and the radio needs two AA batteries for power which are not included.

For testing I tried to get radio stations and FM and AM worked fine for the most part, not great but I found I could get many of the same signals I could on my regular radio. Indoors I found I couldn’t get any shortwave signals, all I got was a lot of static. I then took the radio just out onto the porch and I found I could get all kinds of signals over the shortwave frequencies some in English and some not. I even got some conspiracy theorist guy talking about solar eclipses, solar flares, and the apocalypse coming soon, so you can tune into all kinds of stuff apparently.

Conclusion

 

The Tecsun R-909 shortwave radio isn’t bad at all to take with you camping or hiking or just out and about.

The issue I came across is no signals in my house and that might be specific to my situation. I took it just about 20 feet outside onto the porch and I got all kinds of signals the, so not sure what to really say there, it seems my house or something in the house is interfering with the reception obviously.

The radio is very well made and it seems to work good outside.
