It’s winter time and that means the the furnace comes on to keep you warm which is a good thing but it can be a bad thing as well as it’s dry air and it can aggravate health conditions. If you’ve ever noticed how there’s more static electricity in the winter, the dry air is the cause of that as well which isn’t good if you’re dealing with computers. I personally have bad sinus problems and the dry air makes them a lot worse so I need a humidifier. I recently purchased a new on and I’m very happy with it so I thought it was worth sharing my review of it as you might be interested. The humidifier is from Honeywell and it’s called the Mistmate and it’s a cool mist humidifier that is ultrasonic and doesn’t need a wick or filter or anything like that, it essentially vibrates and produces a cool mist to add humidity to the air. I like this humidifier a lot, it works very well, it’s virtually silent and it lasts a long time. Read on to learn more…
Specifications and Features
The Mistmate is sort of shaped like a ball but flat on the top and bottom, three-fourths of it is water tank at the top and it’s basically clear but smoke colored so you can still see the water level to know when it’s empty. It’s about 9 inches tall and about 8 inches across at the thickest point in the center of the ball shape.
On the front top of the tank is a rectangular hole where the cool mist comes out of and then on the back is handle for you to easily carry it.
The bottom of the tank is where you fill it with water, it has a nice large opening to fill it and it’s easy to open with a rubber gasket around the lid to keep it sealed.
This type of humidifier is ultrasonic and uses a piezoelectric transducer to basically vibrate the water by creating oscillations that create a fine mist which is then forced out of the top through a fan in the base of the humidifier. The result is a cool mist to humidify your room and it’s quiet overall, at least the Mistmate is, it’s just virtually silent really so it should not disturb your sleep if you use it in your bedroom. I sleep with it near me and it does not bother me at all even though I’m a light sleeper. On the bottom of the humidifier is four rubber feet to keep it in place and then you can see where the fan is locate as well.
Right under the tank is the power knob or dial which has a green LED in it to indicate power. Turn to the right to turn it on and adjust the amount of mist and then turn all the way to the left to turn it off and it does click audibly to let you know it’s off or on.
Conclusion
The Honeywell Mistmate humidifier is a great product and I’m very happy I bought it, it works great, it’s quiet and it last a long time.
The specs say it should last about 20 hours but that depends on the level you have it set at. I keep it on high all the time and it easily lasts all night and until the afternoon, so I usually fill it up once per day which is fine by me.
The only real issue is maintenance which can be a hassle and it all depends on the type of water you have or use with it. They say you should use distilled or bottled water but that can end up being a lot of money so I just use regular tap water. Tap water can be fine but it depends on the concentration of minerals in it as to how often you’ll need to clean the humidifier as they can build up and decrease the performance of it. To clean it you need to use a solution of vinegar and water to break up the mineral deposits and then rinse and then you need to use bleach and water to sanitize it and then rinse again, how often you have to do this depends on your water of course.
All in all I like this humidifier a lot, it works great and it’s virtually silent really. Great product.
Pros:
+Virtually silent
+Inexpensive
+Long lasting
Cons:
-Maintenance can be a hassle
