I’ve reviewed a couple LED desk lamps but not any like this one I have today, the others I’ve reviewed were sub-$100 lamps but this one sells for $250. Is a desk lamp worth that much? BenQ thinks so and they’ve put a lot of work and research into designing and constructing this lamp. The lamp features touch controls and a knob style control as well, it allows you to select brightness and color levels, turn it off and on and turn the e-reading mode on which helps prevent glare. The lamp is very well made and it just looks excellent, and it’s very easy to use. I’m very happy with it, I will continue to use it everyday surely. Read on to learn more…
Specifications and Features
Do your eyes sometimes hurt when you’re working on your computer, reading a book, doing paperwork or even just playing on your mobile device? You may be in a poorly lit environment. Most offices and libraries already have decent desk lamps to illuminate the room. However, even the best desk lamps perform poorly and can even cause reflection glare on computer screens and gadgets. That’s why we re-imagined, redesigned and revolutionized the common desk lamp to match changing times.
Introducing the BenQ e-Reading Desk Lamp. The World’s First Lamp Designed for e-Reading. We live in an age where most of our time is spent staring at screens, from e-readers for reading our favorite books, to computer screens and mobile devices for work and play. That’s why we need a task lamp that is specifically designed for the digital era. Unlike the regular task lamps, the BenQ e-Reading lamp has wider lighting coverage. Developed specifically for the usage of monitors, kindles, tablets, and other devices, as well as for use in large workspaces, the desk lamp distributes light evenly across the desk. It delivers a 90cm illumination range, 150% wider than any regular reading lamp, helping you see everything from your keyboard to your entire desk. Its patented “brighter at the sides, darker in the middle” illumination is designed to eliminate glare. When using the computer, lighting should be sufficient for you to see the text as well as the screen. But in most cases, the bright light on the display screen “washes out” the images. The lamp’s intelligent e-Reading mode reduces the contrast glare and the reflection on your screen. To enable it, just touch the metal ring for 2 seconds. The built-in sensor detects the ambient lighting, delivering “brighter on the sides, darker in the middle” illumination. Reduced glare on your screens means longer, more comfortable hours for work, play, reading, surfing the net or just enjoying digital media. The control knob makes this lamp completely adjustable to your needs. You can easily switch from relaxed mode to mode suitable for working with just a simple twist of the knob. Select warmer light tones when reading to relax. Select the cooler tones when doing tasks that need you to concentrate and be alert. With the BenQ e-Reading lamp, life, work, play and entertainment becomes sheer joy. Get your BenQ e-Reading lamp today. Illuminate more and see the difference.

The Review
Let’s start with a video unboxing and then move on:
The box the lamp comes in a big, it’s about 25.5 x 20 x 4 inches and it has a handle on the top to make it easier to carry. Inside of the box is all styrofoam, or it’s a large styrofoam tray the size of the box and it’s holding the pieces of the lamp in place during shipping and protecting them.
Once you get everything unpacked you’ll find the lamp, base, and user manual wrapped in plastic and then a small box with the power supply and a quick start sheet of paper.
The base is very heavy, it’s like a rock really and it has a pin sticking out of it that mates with the bottom of the lamp arm. You put the lamp onto it and tighten the screw on the arm to secure the lamp to the base. There is also an optional clamp style mount that you can get for the lamp, but it’s not included in the box, you have to buy it separately. The solid base work fine for me, I don’t think I’d like it clamped to my desk personally. The base is really very heavy but it need to be as the lamp is tall and the heavy base keeps it from falling over and it works. There’s actually a warning sticker on it about being careful not to drop it on your foot.
The power adapter is interesting, it’s a block style wall adapter with a very short cable coming from it that connects to the cord coming from the lamp.
The lamp is really just two parts, the base and the arm section, it comes preassembled so you don’t have to do much at all. The power cord is thick and braided and it runs along the inside of the arms and ends at the bottom in a female connector for power. The arms have two joints connecting them, one at the bottom and then one near the middle.
The top section is where the light is and it’s mounted on a swivel ball essentially and it allows you to turn, tilt and rotate the light head to get it positioned where you need it. The light section is about 13 inches long and about 2 inches wide. The LEDs are located under a semi-clear cover that has a horizontal lined pattern in it which helps spread the light more evenly.
On the top of the lamp, above the LEDs is where you’ll find the control panel which doesn’t look like a control panel really. There’s a large silver ring on the end which is touch sensitive, tap to turn the light on and off or hold your finger on the ring to enable the special reading mode where the lamp has a light sensor and it adjusts to the ambient room light to make it more comfortable for reading and less glare as only the right and left LED section light up and the middle is off basically. There’s a knob on the top as well that is to control the brightness and color levels. To control the brightness you just turn the knob and the level will change. To change the color level you push the knob in and then turn the knob to cycle through the color levels. The levels range from 2700K which is more yellow or warm and up to 5700K which has a slight blue tint to it which would be cool. Where the silver ring meets the light is a green LED that will light up when you are in the reading mode to let you know. I would have liked the controls to be on the base like other lamps but this works and I understand why they did it this way.
When assembled the light looks very modern, my wife said it reminds her of a robot and it sort of does. The light makes a very nice presentation and it should fit fine in the office or on your desk at home. The lamp is very well made, it’s finished and painted perfectly, no sharp edges or anything like that as all of the edges are rounded. The one I got is silver but there are other colors available like red, blue or gold, but pick a color and it would fit well even in a bedroom.
The light is very bright on the highest setting and fairly low on the lowest, I do wish it could get lower in brightness, especially at night. The other lamp I had I would turn down all the way at night, or when I wasting a movie as to prevent glare. The light has 36 LEDs in a strip which alternate white and yellow and which comes on depends on the mode you’re in.
I’m using the lamp on my computer desk of course and it works perfectly for my uses as it’s very tall and the arm and head can be moved around to be positioned right where I need and want it. The instructions say to put the lamp in the center or and above your main monitor which is what I did and it works great there. The lamp illuminates my entire desk and not just a small area like other lamps I’ve tried. The curved shape of the light enables it to light up everything in the area which I very much like about it.
Conclusion
The BenQ WiT LED desk lamp is an excellent choice for lighting your home or office, it just looks great and it would fit fine anywhere.
I’m very happy with this lamp overall, the only complaint I might have really is that I wish it could get dimmer that it does, but I can live with it as is.
The lamp is very well made and sturdy and it stays well balanced no matter how far you extend the arm thanks to the very heavy base.
All in all I like this lamp a lot, it provides a lot of light and it gives you choices for brightness levels and color level modes.
