Review of Synology DiskStation DS415+ NAS

Conclusion

The DS415+ is another winner in the home user/small business NAS category for Synology. As the successor to the DS412+ this unit upgrades the processing power by using an Intel Atom C2538 Quad Core processor.

With remote attacks become more prevalent Synology continues to improve security with its built in AES-NI hardware encryption engine able to provide AES 256 bit encryption on the fly. Surprisingly encrypted transfers only minimally impact the network performance making it almost criminal not to take advantage of the encryption feature.

It features the usual connections found on more recent Synology units such as USB 3.0 ports, dual LAN with the ability to run Link Aggregation.

The four-bay DS415+ provides plenty of storage capacity as it can top out at 24 TB. Plus it has plenty of speed and processing horsepower with the quad core CPU.

Besides the hardware revisions the software has been improved as Disk Station Manager 5.1 provides deeper centralized cloud integration using public or private cloud solutions.

All this power does come at a price – $599 which is before adding hard drives. However when you take into account the features, ease of use, frequent upgrades of Disk Station Manager then it is a worthwhile investment for either the home or small business user.

+Quad Core with AES-NI hardware encryption engine

+Intuitive user interface – Disk Station Manager
