Review of Tauren Outdoor Bluetooth Solar Powered Speaker

tauren3
Up for review today I’ve got a Bluetooth speaker from a company called Tauren and what sets this one apart from others is that it has a built-in solar panel for additional power while you’re on the go. It has a solar panel so obviously it’s a product that’s meant top be used more outdoors and it seems rugged and durable and they even include a carabineer so you can attach it to your pack while you’re out and about. The speaker can also be used as a speakerphone so you don’t even have to take your phone out of your pocket or pack while you’re hiking to take calls. Battery life isn’t the greatest at about four hours, but the solar panel will supposedly extend the playback time, but still four hours isn’t really much at all in my opinion. The Review

Let’s start with a video unboxing:

The packaging is a clear plastic box which actually arrived broken to me, but the speaker itself was fine. When you unpack everything you’ll find the user guide, carabineer, and microUSB charging cable.

The speaker is about palm sized with dimensions of about 4x3x2 inches. It’s round and almost egg shaped with the control panel on the top and the speaker underneath it with a metal grill covering it for protection. It does feel solidly made so it appear to be fairly rugged and durable. It’s listed as something to be used outdoors and for camping and hiking etc but I see no mention of it being any level of waterproof.

On the front you’ll find all the buttons and controls for power, mode, answer/end calls, volume up and down, skip forward and back and play/pause and there’s also the microphone there as it can be used as a speakerphone.

On the bottom you’ll find  a small solar panel which, from what I’ve read, is used to extend the battery life and not really charge the battery. The idea would be to charge it before you leave via USB and then the solar panel will keep it charged via the sun as you’re on the go and using it. It doesn’t say what the battery capacity is but it does state that you should get about four hours paly time on a single charge which isn’t much honestly. The specs say it’s four hours playback time and the solar cell could extend battery life. I’m guessing the idea is you’re using it outside for music but it’s charging while you’re using it so you could or should get more than four hours battery life.

On the bottom edge you’ll find a rubber door that covers the microUSB port and microSD slot. The rubber door fits snugly and will keep the weather out.

On the top edge is a thick rubber strap where you can attach the carabineer so you can take it with you easily like hanging it off of your backpack while hiking.

For testing I paired it with my Samsung Galaxy S6 phone via Bluetooth obviously and I had no issue with the pairing process. The LED blinks blue constantly once you’re paired.

The speaker does have decent bass to it but it gets distorted at high volume, very distorted actually. If you’re holding the speaker while playing music you can feel it vibrating in your hand, and even on your desk you can feel the vibrations through it.

The sound isn’t bad but it’s not great either, there’s just something missing, I think it’s too much bass and not enough treble really. It just sounds kind of flat overall without much highs at all.

The microSD slot is a  nice addition as it basically turns the speaker itself into an MP3 player, or at least a very basic one.

Conclusion

The Tauren outdoor speaker isn’t a bad choice for taking your audio with you, but it does have some issues.

It is well made and rugged and it seems very durable and I like the microSD slot a lot.

The addition of the solar panel is unique for a speaker, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a speaker with a solar panel built-in before and it’s good it’s there as the battery life isn’t very good at all.

Sound quality is just bearable in my opinion, it seems there’s too much bass and almost no treble from what I can hear. There’s so so much bass in fact that the sound gets distorted a lot at higher volume levels.

Pros:
+Well made, seems rugged and durable
+Solar panel for extra power
+microSD card slot for MP3s

Cons:
-No Aux, Bluetooth only
-Distortion at higher volume levels
-Short battery life
